Based in South London, Kode9 & the Spaceape is a unique producer/vocalist collaboration that vibrates the parts other artists don`t reach, whether through their high octane DJ/MC sets or their grounding-shakingly deep Bass Fiction Live sets. Their first infamous collaboration was released in 2004, a murky, beatless cover of Prince's Sign of the Times known as Sine of the Dub. In 2006, they released their first album together, Memories of the Future, and Kode9 mixed the Dubstep Allstars Vol.3 CD compilation on Tempa records. Kode9 & the Spaceape have played together all over Europe and have also recorded live studio sets for BBC Radio 1 in the UK. While Kode9 has been a regular visitor to the US in the last couple of years, most recently in April 2009, touring with Flying Lotus in LA, San Francisco, Coachella and at the Museum of Natural History in New York, this summer saw his first tour with vocalist Spaceape in the States.
Spaceape is a vocal/video artist whose dubtronic styles span between deep, granulated spoken word, mesmeric chanting, whispered rhymes through to hyped up MC'ing. Working mostly with Kode9, Spaceape tells abstract, open ended stories from another dimension. He has also featured on high profile collaborations such as on Burial's first album, The Bug's London Zoo Album, Martyn's recent Great Lengths and also Brenden Moeller's releases.
Currently, Kode9`s sometimes unpredictable DJ sets travel through a selection of dubstep, grime, synth-driven hiphop, techno, garage and the emerging variant of percussive UK House, aka 'funky'. Since 2001, his DJ sets have helped spread the South London sound internationally, across East Asia, Europe, South America, North America and Australia. For four years, he hosted the weekly Fwd>> show on London pirate radio station Rinse Fm and is one of the rotating DJs at the seminal DMZ and Forward>> nights in London. As a producer, he has released tracks on Aphex Twin`s Rephlex label, pioneering dubstep label Tempa, Soul Jazz, Domino, On U Sound and his own Hyperdub imprint and has remixed artists such as Lee 'Scratch' Perry, the Junior Boys and Dabrye feat. MF. Doom.
Kode9 also runs the record label Hyperdub known for releasing artists such as Burial, The Bug, Samiyam, Ikonika, Darkstar and Zomby, as well as remixes from the likes of Flying Lotus and Dabrye. Hyperdub will be celebrating the label's first five years come October with the release of an anniversary 2 CD compilation, entitled simply Five, featuring classics from the back catalogue and a new tunes from the artists on the label, as well as friends such as Mala from Digital Mystikz, Martyn and Flying Lotus. And that`s not all! A third Burial album is in the pipeline for '09, as well as full-length records from King Midas Sound, Darkstar, Ikonika and Kode 9 and Spaceape.
